Project: Increasing Staff Applications for Farm & Wilderness

Each summer Farm & Wilderness needs nearly 250 staff across its 7 programs to run its camps, ranging from counselors to cooks, trips staff to nurses. Like many organizations it was struggling to attract new applicants, particular applicants from diverse backgrounds. We created new media and new processes for the organization, focusing on making relevant content, writing copy that felt approachable and sincere, and focused on video elements.

How’d We Make It Happen?

  1. New Staff Webpages with Approachable Language – Working with a design firm we created beautiful webpages that included relaxed and approachable language. We focused on making information quickly accessible and in brand-aligned language, such as the “Why F&W” page and various landing pages for staff. In the last year, the pages have had nearly 40k views, double that of the year before.

  2. Youtube Video Series for Staff – We shot and editing simple staff interviews, including graphics. These videos were embedded in parts of the website, email campaigns, and more. The videos had a combined 150,788 views in 2022.

  3. TikTok Campaign – We used TikTok as a staff testimonials platform, reusing footage from YouTube Videos and shooting some new footage. We shaped an intentional strategy that isn’t focused on chasing trends but instead showcasing the organization to potential staff. The combined views are nearly 14k and 10% of all new applicants found F&W on TikTok.

  4. New Hiring Systems – We helped write new questions and answer rubrics as part of a broad strategy shift in how staff were interviewed and selected.

Results

All together received 71% more applications as compared to the years before. Camp Directors reported candidates were of higher quality, were better prepared, and more diverse. Interviewers would note how frequently candidates would site the videos and/or the F&W mission and values in their interviews. F&W is still seeing an increase in applicants each season.

Project: Launching a Podcast to Showcase Expertise

Farm & Wilderness has a great story to tell and needed a way to do so that would reach its particular clientele and audience of current and former staff, campers, and families. The organization has already produced blog posts, Instagram feeds, YouTube, and TikTok videos and was looking for what’s next. F&W wanted to find a long-form way to share its expertise and establish its brand and reputation in the larger education space.

How’d We Make It Happen?

  1. Generated List of Topics & Interviews – Using our unique knowledge of the F&W culture, we generated topics and interview suggestions and prioritized them based on organizational enrollment needs.

  2. Researched History & Wrote Scripts – We wrote scripts for episodes, including developing unique taglines and lines of questions. We referenced other podcasts that had been identified as models for the F&W one.

  3. Recorded & Edited Audio – We handled all recording and editing, including preparing interviewees, mixing original music, and cleaning up the audio.

  4. Published to Major Platforms – We handled all branding and posting to major platforms, including Apple Podcasts. We developed visual assets to promote each episode across various social platforms.

Results

We produced 8 episodes for a limited spring series to test the format for the organization. We received positive feedback from current and former staff, campers, and families and several noted the podcast episodes were important to then deciding to sign-up for Farm & Wilderness.
